Trade
Justice
Campaigning and local public awareness -raising schemes on the issue of free trade, debt cancellation
and the eradication of world poverty.
Overnight on
the 15 - 16th April 2005 some members of our church took part in the Wake up to Trade Justice event along with other people
from all over the country. The event was the climax to the Global Week of Action in the UK. The main event was the dawn procession,
where thousands of people marched past the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street.
One of our
members wrote down her memories. Her prose is reproduced below.
Trade Justice. Dusk until Dawn.
What an experience!
Volunteers at the ready
Police are on duty,
helping those
in need.
Westminster Abbey and grounds are open to every person.
Prayers are said. A signal is given - UNITE!
People step forward, a chain of white adorns
Parliament Square.
Movement is imminent, banners are in place.
Big Ben strikes the hour, the march begins.
Candles light up the night; Noise is deafening!
Voices are
heard along Whitehall,
DO YOU HEAR US? Making this statement in the night,
Silence! Thousands stand in unison making a point for
justice.---
The Night
Crowds Disperse to claim a place for rest.
Groups gather for discussions.
Workshops are open. Make more banners; design your puppets;
Read the news - share a meal with companions - find refuge
in the churches and pray for solidarity.
REFRESHED! The Sun rises and thousands are ready to march
again-
Banners flying, life-like puppets mingling between the
crowd.
BIG BEN STRIKES! -----Time to go!
The sounds ring across the square and through to the Embankment.
New found friends unite again for a cause that will
MAKE
POVERTY HISTORY.
